I am a huge fan of the RadioLab podcast, and in their episode 'Contact' they spoke a little about Social Norms... I thought their words were worth sharing:
'People sometimes talk about social norms as if they come from somewhere in the universe outside ourselves and we just have to live with them. But really, it is just us, looking around at the world and each other for clues of how to behave. Sometimes the clues come from the loud one, sometimes from our instincts, or the police, or the weather, logic, emotion, history, politics, a million variables on any given day… all of which makes crowd behaviour incredibly difficult to predict.'
